La niña de mis ojos

Cuando escuchamos la palabra niña, normalmente pensamos en una mujer muy, muy joven, como esta:

When we hear the word niña, we usually think of a very, very young girl like this:

Esta niña sonriente, de pie en un jardín, rodeada por césped y flores, que sostiene una regadera, fue elegida como modelo por el pintor impresionista francés Auguste Renoir en 1876. 

This smiling girl, standing in a garden, surrounded by grass and flowers and holding a watering can, was chosen as a model by impressionist artist Auguste Renoir in 1876.

Sin embargo, la palabra niña tiene otros significados. En esta foto podemos ver la niña de un ojo, es decir, la pupila: el círculo negro situado en el centro del iris del ojo que se contrae o se dilata para dejar que la luz entre en la retina.

However, the word niña has other meanings. In this picture we can see the niña of an eye, that is to say, the pupil, the black hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that contracts or dilates to allow light to enter the retina.

               

Y, si alguien nos dice "tú eres la niña de mis ojos", ¿qué significa esa expresión?: Pues cuando alguien utiliza esa expresión, quiere decir que te tiene mucho cariño, que eres muy importante y especial para él / ella. 

And what if someone tells us "tu eres la niña de mis ojos"?, what does that expression mean? Well. when somebody uses that expression, he / she means to tell you that he / she holds you dear, that you are very important and special to him / her. In English we say "you are the apple of my eye"

La niña de este cuadro de Picasso es su hija María Concepción, Maya. La pintó en muchas ocasiones, en diferentes estilos y a diferentes edades: probablemente ella era la "niña de sus ojos".

The girl in this painting by Picasso is his daughter María Concepción, Maya. He painted her on many occasions, in different styles and at different ages: she was probably the  "niña de sus ojos".  
                                                                                                                                    

En cuanto a Renoir, él no tuvo hijas, sino tres hijos. Pintó a muchas niñas, pero su modelo favorita durante años fue Gabrielle Renard, la niñera de sus hijos, es decir, la mujer encargada de cuidarlos. En este cuadro la vemos con uno de los hijos del pintor, el famoso director Jean Renoir. 

Quizás para este caso deberíamos acuñar una nueva expresión: "la niñera de sus ojos" ;)

As to Renoir, he didn't have any daughters, only three sons. He painted many girls, but his favourite model for several years was his sons' "niñera", their nanny, the woman employed to look after them. In this painting we can see her with one of the artist's sons, the famous French film director Jean Renoir. Maybe in this case we should coin a new expression, "niñera de sus ojos" ;)
