¡Toma castaña!

La castaña, uno de los símbolos del otoño, es el fruto comestible del castaño, árbol del género Castanea propio de climas templados del hemisferio norte. El fruto se presenta en una cápsula espinosa que tiene entre 5 y 11 centímetros de diámetro que consta de 2 a 7 castañas.

The chestnut, one of the symbols of autumn, is an edible fruit produced by trees of the genus Castanea native to northern temperate regions. The fruit is enclosed in a prickly husk between 4 and 11 centimetres in size which contains from 2 to 7 nuts.

Castaño es el color propio de la cáscara de la castaña y es sinónimo del galicismo marrón.

Castaño is a brownish colour, as in the skin of a chestnut, and in Spanish it is a synonym of the gallicism 'marrón'.

Antes de la llegada de la patata y del maíz desde América, las castañas fueron una importante fuente de alimentación en el sur de Europa: las comunidades que habitaban cerca de bosques de castaños y que no tenían acceso a la harina de cereal utilizaban las castañas como principal fuente de carbohidratos. 

Before potatoes and corn were brought to Europe from America, chestnuts were an important pillar of the diet in southern European countries: communities living near chestnut woods used them as their main source of carbohydrates, especially when cereal flour was not available.


La castaña constituyó un aporte esencial calórico para el hombre y también para los animales domésticos, debido a que son ricas en grasas, proteínas, minerales y vitamina C. Otro fin importante de las castañas era la elaboración de harina con la que preparar pan, pasteles y pasta.

Chestnuts were an essential calorie supply for both men and cattle, as they are rich in fats, proteins, minerals and vitamin C. Chestnuts were also used to make flour to bake bread, cakes and pasta. 

Las castañas se pueden comer crudas, hervidas en leche, asadas o dulces en forma de marrón glacé. Una forma sencilla de asarlas es realizar un pequeño corte en cada castaña y calentarlas en un contenedor metálico a 400 ºC durante 10 ó 15 minutos. El propósito del corte es evitar que estallen durante el proceso de asado.

Chestnuts can be served raw, baked, boiled in milk or candied in syrup as in marron glacé. An easy way to cook them is by cutting a little incision on each nut and bake them on a metallic container for 10 to 15 minutes at 400 ºC. The purpose of this incission is to stop chestnuts from bursting.

En el norte de España, las fiestas tradicionales de la recogida de las castañas se realizan a finales de octubre o noviembre y entre todas las que se celebran destaca en importancia el magosto de Galicia y norte de Portugal.

In northern Spain, the tradicional chestnut harvest festival is carried out in late October or in November. One the most important festivals is the 'magosto' held in Galicia and northern Portugal.

Pero la palabra castaña también tiene otros significados. Usada en aumentativo significa "golpe fuerte": Como no tengas cuidado te llevarás un buen castañazo.

But the word castaña has other various meanings. In its augmentative form it means a 'strong blow': If you aren't more careful, you will get a big blow.

También puede significar "borrachera": Salieron hasta tarde y cogieron una buena castaña.

It can also refer to 'drunkenness' or 'binge': They went out until the small hours and got really plastered.

Marrón glacé

Se puede usar con tono despectivo para indicar que algo es muy aburrido o que una cosa está mal hecha o es de mala calidad: No voy a seguir leyendo este libro, es una castaña; Tengo el coche en el taller, siempre está averiado, me ha salido una castaña.

It can be used disparangingly to indicate that something is really boring or that it is badly crafted  and poor quality: I'm giving up this book, it's rubbish; My car is at the mechanic's, it's always broken down, it is a wreck.


En ocasiones empleamos castañas como sinónimo de "años": En junio cumpliré ya 46 castañas.

Sometimes we use castañas as a synonym of 'years of age': I'll be turning 46 next June.

Sacarle a alguien las castañas del fuego es solucionarle a alguien un problema acuciante.

Sacarle a alguien las castañas del fuego is to save someone's bacon or to get somebody out of trouble.

Exclamamos "¡toma castaña!" con satisfacción cuando celebramos algún pequeño éxito o victoria.

We exclaim '¡toma castaña!' to express something similar to 'take that!' or 'It serves you right!' when we celebrate and show our satisfaction with some kind of victory or success.

Y por último, si algo pasa de castaño oscuro... es que ha superado todos los límites admisibles y ha agotado nuestra paciencia.

And finally, ' sialgo pasa de castaño oscuro'... we mean that something has gone well beyond the pale and we have run out of patience.
