Es gato y araña

Este bichito con cuatro pares de larguísimas patas es una araña que encontré ayer en mi garaje. Este tipo de animal produce un hilo de seda muy resistente con la que construyen su tela de araña o telaraña. Las arañas muestran una gran variedad de comportamientos, por eso se han convertido en símbolos mitológicos y artísticos asociados con la paciencia, la crueldad o la creatividad.

This little creepy-crawly with four pairs of very long legs is a spider I found in my garage yesterday. Spiders produce a highly resistant silk thread with which they spin their webs. Spiders show a wide range of behaviours, that is why they have become common symbols in art and mythology associated to patience, cruelty and creative powers.

¡Toma castaña!

La castaña, uno de los símbolos del otoño, es el fruto comestible del castaño, árbol del género Castanea propio de climas templados del hemisferio norte. El fruto se presenta en una cápsula espinosa que tiene entre 5 y 11 centímetros de diámetro que consta de 2 a 7 castañas.

The chestnut, one of the symbols of autumn, is an edible fruit produced by trees of the genus Castanea native to northern temperate regions. The fruit is enclosed in a prickly husk between 4 and 11 centimetres in size which contains from 2 to 7 nuts.

Castaño es el color propio de la cáscara de la castaña y es sinónimo del galicismo marrón.

Castaño is a brownish colour, as in the skin of a chestnut, and in Spanish it is a synonym of the gallicism 'marrón'.

Otoño

Tradicionalmente el otoño es la tercera estación del año. Es la época de la caída de la hoja y de que los colores ocres, sienas, naranjas y rojizos dominen el paisaje... El otoño también es sinónimo de vuelta al cole y para muchos, al igual que en Año Nuevo, del inicio de un nuevo ciclo, nuevos planes y propósitos: dejar de fumar, volver a estudiar un idioma extranjero, apuntarse a un gimnasio.

Autumn is traditionally the third season of the year. It is time for leaves to fall and time for ocher, sienna, orange and reddish colours to flood the landscape. Autumn also means we are back to school and for many, just as at New Year's time, it is the beginning of a new cycle, new plans and new resolutions: quit smoking, try to study a foreign language, start working out in a gym..

¡Vete a hacer puñetas!

Puñeta es un sustantivo femenino que deriva de la palabra puño. Como se puede apreciar en la fotografía anterior, puñeta es la bocamanga adornada con bordados, encajes o puntillas de las togas de los jueces y letrados en los tribunales de justicia, o de rectores, doctores y profesores en actos solemnes universitarios. Pueden llegar a ser verdaderas obras artesanales.

Puñeta is a feminine noun derived from the word puño (fist/cuff). As you can see in the picture above, puñeta is a piece of lace added to the cuffs of ceremonial robes of judges and lawyers in court, or of rectors, doctors and professors at university ceremonies. Embroidering puñetas can be a really artful, skilled craft.
